REVIEW: Gabrielle Chanel - Fashion Manifesto

Updated: Sep 22, 2023

Classic outfits galore await you at the V&A's autumnal blockbuster show. Sold out until the 19 December this show is the season's hot ticket 🎟️ Might be time to think about membership if you want to try and get in early.....

The first retrospective held here in the UK Gabrielle Chanel: Fashion Manifesto follows the twists and turns of this iconic, pioneering designer. The galleries are packed to the rafters with totally timeless pieces (over 200). From the oldest known silk blouse (1916) to knitted sporting wear, suits in every colour of the rainbow, jewellery, bags, perfume plus heaps of little black dresses and lots of STUNNING ball gowns - you don't know where to look first. Every single journalist at the preview remarked on how modern each piece still looked today. The 60 iconic suits stacked sky high from floor to ceiling blow our minds. Described by Vogue 'as the worlds prettiest uniform' we had fun choosing our favourite.

Delve deeper with dress maker Sue in this charming V&A masterclass Fashion Unpicked: Chanel which takes a closer look at an elegant rose-pink suit made especially for actress Lauren Bacall in 1959.

There is a fascinating time wall as you enter the exhibition detailing Coco's 60 year career. Born into poverty and send to a convent school for orphans after her fathers death Gabrielle first venture was as a milliner selling hats from an apartment in Paris. Mention is made of her controversial links to the French resistance and her affair with a German officer....but then glossed over.

A real treat for any budding fashionista and we think a great Christmas pressie for any Mum. A pair of her metallic party PJ's are firmly on our wish list!
